Faced with such extreme tragedies in their lives, some people would become depressed to the point of being suicidal. Not Job. Nor did he summon artificial courage to make “positive confessions.” He did not want to kill himself, but life was so terrible for him he wished he had never been born (Job 3:11-13,16). That was why he cursed the day of his birth. He did something else, something he would repeat again and again. He asked serious questions and raises profound issues to which no one knows the answer, not even today!
See what he says in Job 3:13-15 about the high achievers of this world. Ultimately, in what ways are they different from the still births described in Job 3:16-17? Now, take a look at Job 3:20. Why, indeed! If an unbeliever were to ask you this question, what would be your answer? Job had done everything he knew how to ensure that all was well with him and his children; but look at Job 3:25. How would you have reacted if it was you? How would you have counselled someone else in that position?
